Description
A pair of Legras Art Nouveau vases from the Pompeii range
Originally shown at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889
These richly decorated vases have an inner layer of opaline glass cased in rouge de chine coloured glass resembling pink marble. Applied gold floral motifs and aventurine inclusions complete the effect of sumptuousness.
Legras’ Pompéi vases were innovative and much admired for their technique and aesthetic when they were presented in 1889. Le Figaro newspaper enthused that they were “as if fashioned from blocks of volcanic lava.” They speak to the taste for luxury and opulence in the Art Nouveau/Belle Époque period.
